The 19th Annual Coloplast International Tournament
On January 14, 2011, hot on the heels of their sponsorship by Numis Network, the Tampa Generals set out to compete in the 19th Coloplast International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament. Held at the All People's Life Center in Tampa, Florida, close to Numis Network's corporate headquarters, the Coloplast International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament is a three day, annual competition that attracts teams from as far away as Switzerland.
Wheelchair rugby, also known as Quad rugby, is a competitive, full-contact sport with more than 50 teams worldwide. It is also the fastest- growing wheelchair oriented sport in the world. Local residents, as well as Numis Network representatives and employees, were able to witness the intensity of this sport first hand as a half-dozen teams converged in Tampa, Florida, for what proved to be an unforgettable weekend. This year's tournament, hosted by the Numis Network sponsored Tampa Generals, spotlighted teams from Colorado, Alabama, California, Ontario, and Switzerland.

This was an all-play-all tournament in which each team had to, in turn, compete against every other team over the course or the weekend in order to determine the seeding for Sunday's playoff. Many of the fans from Numis Network were amazed at the level of endurance that this demanded of the players since it meant that each team would be playing in at least six games during the weekend and the top four teams would each have one additional playoff game.

The weekend event began Friday morning with the Lakeshore Demolition demolishing Ontario's London Annihilators in the opening game 47-36. While the Annihilators put up an admirable fight, they proved to be no match against the highly enthusiastic Demolition. The morning games continued, much to the excitement of fans from Numis Network, with hometown favorites the Tampa Generals squaring off against Switzerland's national wheelchair rugby team. Unfortunately, the Tampa Generals were unable to overcome Switzerland's early lead in the first quarter and lost to their European competitors 58-33.
Meanwhile, on the second court, the Denver Harlequins battled valiantly against the PossAbilities Crown Rugby team only to lose in a close match 52-47. These two juggernauts would face each other again later in the tournament. But many of the fans from Numis Network agreed that the most stunning match of the day had to be the Lakeshore Demolition's narrow victory of the PossAbilities later in the afternoon which saw Lakeshore's Delvin McMillan score an astounding 32 goals in their 51-49 victory over the PossAbilities.

Saturday morning's games opened up, to the delight of the fans at Numis Network, with the Tampa Generals defeating the Annihilators 49-47. The dominance of the Swiss team was evident, however, as they beat both the Denver Harlequins and Lakeshore Demolition in subsequent games. As the only undefeated team, Switzerland clinched the number one seed for Sunday's playoffs. Much to our dismay at Numis Network, the Tampa Generals ended Saturday with a resounding loss to the PossAbilities who would go on to claim the number two seed for the playoff after a three-way tie-breaker with the Harlequins and Demolition who took the number three and four seeds respectively. That left Numis Network's favorites the Generals with the number five seed and the Annihilators taking the final slot.
Sunday opened with the first semifinal of the playoffs between Switzerland and Lakeshore. The fans from Numis Network watched as these two teams battled it out for a spot in the championship game. Switzerland once again proved to be too much for Lakeshore and won with a 45-34 victory. The second semifinal match saw Denver seeking to vindicate themselves after their first round loss to the PossAbilities. Despite Crown Rugby's early lead in the first half, the Harlequins came back win thanks in part to the efforts of tournament MVP Chance Sumner.

The Lakeshore Demolition and PossAbilities Crown Rugby would go on to battle it out for third place later that morning. This epic battle resulted in a narrow victory for Lakeshore after another outstanding performance by McMillan. Their 42-41 win secured their third place ranking for the tournament. On the center's second court, Numis Network favorites, the Tampa Generals fought it out with Ontario's London Annihilators for fifth place. Despite their confidence after Saturday's victory against the Annihilators, the Generals were defeated in another close match 49-45.
Switzerland would close out the Coloplast International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament with a definitive 52-43 victory against Denver. Numis Network was proud to help sponsor the tournament and the Tampa Generals and looks forward to the upcoming Atlantic Sectional Championship in March, 2011.
