Slam into the New Year

The Tampa Generals will have a busy month ahead of them with two of their biggest tournaments of the season scheduled during the first half of January. For those of you in the area of Jacksonville, Florida, be sure to catch their first tournament of the year, the 5th Annual Southern Slam next weekend January 6-9. The Southern Slam is a 10 team tounament organized by the Brooks Rehabilitation Center and held at the Jacksonville Ice & Sportsplex.

Ray Higdon Gets Locked Up!

Recently, Numis Network's #1 income earner, Ray Higdon, was locked up for "good". Before you jump to conclusions, relax, Ray was not actually arrested and taken to jail. Ray was actually taking part in the Muscular Dystrophy Association's unique fundraising program.

In an effort to make fundraising fun, the MDA created the Lock-up program where local business and community leaders agree to be "arrested." Charged with having a "big heart" and being heavily armed with kindness, these criminal do-gooders must now raise "bail" in the form of donations to the MDA.

In 1964, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay began its history as Big Brothers of Hillsborough County. Big Sisters of Tampa was formed soon after in 1965 when a juvenile court judge, James Calhoun, and a local women’s group recognized an overwhelming need for it. In 1967, A. Ernie Ortiz became the first “Little Brother” in the national organization’s history to rise to the post of Executive Director of a Big Brother affiliate. It wasn’t until 1981, however, when Big Brothers of Hillsborough County and Big Sisters of Tampa finally merged to create Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay.
