In January of 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred 15 miles west of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, devastating the small Caribbean nation. According to the Haitian government, the earthquake left 222,000 people dead and injured more than 300,000. More than one million people were left homeless.

In a recent video message, actor Hugh Jackman and his wife Deborra-Lee Furness, both ambassadors for World Vision Australia, warned that more than 13 million people were at risk due to the extreme drought currently being experienced in the Horn of Africa. Coming just one week after a gathering of the African Union in Ethiopia last month, the warning underscores the extreme conditions being felt on the continent. It is estimated that there are more than 2.3 million acutely malnourished children across the Horn of Africa.
